Centrifugal Casting Benefits

Unlike static casting, a centrifugally cast component solidifies under a force often 50 to 100 times greater due to the rate of rotation of the mold. When coupled with skill and experience, this process results in several centrifugal casting benefits. .

Generally the metal freezes quickly due to the high rate of heat extraction which can be further enhanced by water cooling the mold during the time of solidification. Metallurgically the greatest benefit this provides is a finer grain structure within the microstructure of the casting. The finer the grain structure the better the combination of strength and toughness.

The centrifuging action during solidification also forces lighter impurities into the bore of the casting, such bore also functioning as the feeding head for casting, this portion of the casting is then subsequently removed by machining.
